Little Changes

This imaginative book tells the story of the “rinkidinks”: fictional friends that were “little beasts that wouldn’t come much taller than your knees.” Each was slightly different, and when their species suddenly faced cataclysmic changes to their environment, they were forced to adapt and change in major ways.

Evolutionary biologist Dr. Tiffany Taylor has given us an engaging story for children that teaches important mechanisms behind evolutionary change like selection, variation, and speciation—without using the terms themselves. We learn that all living things have undergone a similar process of change and that if we look back far enough, we can find our own family connections from long ago.

This book communicates a scientific idea well and, while it doesn’t bring this idea into dialogue with religious faith, it builds a solid understanding of some of the ways evolution can work, which can inform, and encourage, science-faith questions.
